Experts Share Ways to Relieve Hand Tremors Caused by Excessive Stress

Almost everyone experiences hand tremors when under stress or after overexertion. For some, this involuntary shaking occurs during activities like writing or holding a cup—a common symptom of essential tremor, a condition affecting an estimated 60 million people worldwide.

Quick Self-Test: Do You Have Hand Tremors?

If you suspect you might have essential tremors, a simple test like drawing spirals can help assess the severity based on their stability. According to Dr. Zhao Yijing, a consultant neurologist, doctors typically evaluate the condition through medical history, physical exams, and possibly brain scans or blood tests.

What Causes Hand Tremors?

Dr. Zhao Yi Jing (Consultant Neurologist, Zhao Neurology & Headache Clinic): “Hand tremors are quite common, often triggered by stress or physical strain. The most affected groups are young adults and the elderly. In younger individuals, it’s usually due to genetic factors, known as essential tremor. For those over 65, it’s often enhanced physiological tremor.”

Essential Tremor vs. Parkinson’s Disease

Essential tremor, also called primary tremor, is often mistakenly linked to Parkinson’s disease. However, the two conditions have key differences.

Dr. Zhao explains: “Essential tremor has a genetic component and is more noticeable during specific actions, like eating or using chopsticks. In contrast, Parkinson’s tremors are most apparent at rest—for example, while sitting and watching TV.”

Additionally, essential tremor may affect not just the hands but also the head, voice, or throat.

Nutrition Tips to Help Reduce Tremors

A balanced diet supports optimal brain and nerve function. Key nutrients include:

  • B vitamins – Support nervous system health.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – Improves brain communication and reduce inflammation. Found in cod, salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, flaxseeds, and walnuts.
  • Antioxidant-rich foods – Protect neurons from oxidative damage. Examples: blueberries, dark chocolate, turmeric, green tea, citrus fruits, and nuts.

  2. Pat cod fillets dry and cut into chunks.
  3. Pan-fry cod until golden.

Beyond diet, relaxation techniques, arm stretches, and hand warmth are crucial. Regular hand exercises—massages, squeezing a stress ball, making fists, or writing—can also help minimize tremors.
